Monday Night in Football Hades

Hopefully, by now, you know my stance on the Philadelphia sports fan. Unlike pretty much any other fan, I wish the Philadelphia fan nothing but the worst. I know a few people from Philly, and they are nice enough people when separated from their element, but when you get all of those hoodlums together at the same time, it resembles the scene from Frankenstein when the city charges the castle. They are an illogical, angry mob with little regard to decency or courtesy. They are bitter and violent (not opinion, but fact). They deserve, as a group, nothing but painful, losing seasons that begin with promise of titles, and then end with pain and suffering.

What is so sad about the Philadelphia sports fan is that the decent and courteous in their sect do not disavow those bad apples who champion their lawless existence. Instead they rationalize and defend them, and blame the media for trying to paint a negative picture of their misunderstood “choir boys”. They even say absurd things like, "you shouldn't wear a t-shirt for the other team here" or "out of towners shouldn't go to a game here" to explain away assualts on even the most docile of visitors. Therefore, they are grouped together in their cesspool of filth as a collective group of bitter men who shall be cursed by the sports gods for evermore.

Just think, even as we speak, they are pouring as much alcohol into their pie holes as humanly possible, in a never ending effort to scare aliens out of ever visiting our planet. And, to prepare to make life miserable for the Dallas Cowboys tonight on Monday Night Football.

Kickoff awaits.

Sadly, I have it: Philadelphia 24, Cowboys 19. This is based on my theory of "who wants it, losing to who needs it".

Eagles realize tonight is imperative

Lose tonight and the Eagles are 4-5 overall, which means they would have to go 6-1 just to get to the 10-win mark that is normally required to reach the playoffs. What's worse is that they would be 1-4 against NFC teams and 0-3 in the NFC East. All the tiebreakers will be working against them.

Given the events of the last 10 days, the importance of this game goes beyond the playoff race.

For Eagles fans, Rich Hoffman says get off Donovan

THE EAGLES' DEFENSE is on a pace to allow 42 touchdowns this season (compared to 29 last year, and 19 in 2001). The last time they gave up more than 42 defensive touchdowns, it was 1987 - and those stats included three scab games played during a strike. The times before that, in order, were 1973 (5-8-1), 1972 (2-11-1) and 1967 (6-7-1).

But, you're right - it's all Donovan McNabb's fault.

The Eagles' offense is on a pace to run the ball 288 times this season (compared to 376 last year, a really low number as it was). It would be the lowest total for the team since at least the 1940s, except for one season - 1982, when the Eagles played only nine games because of another players strike.

But, yeah, it's all on Don.

Not to beat this lack of a ground game into the ground, but you can't just shrug it off. We're not talking about a passing coach going a little pass-heavy. We're talking history if this pace continues. Throw out 1982, and the last time somebody in the NFL rushed fewer than 300 times in a season, it was the 1946 Detroit Lions in an 11-game season (1-10). That is how little run support the Eagles have managed so far.

With that, go get 'em, No. 5.

Stars win both games this weekend in California

Check out the headline:

Turco earns a spa day in Stars' 3-1 win

Spa day? That is the gayest thing I have ever seen. Please tell me this is poetic license from the newspaper, and not Marty Turco actually being rewarded for last night’s efforts with a trip to the spa scene in “Dumb and Dumber”.

Kurt Busch gets in trouble …but this is a basic story of employer and employee hating each other and playing out the string…

When one of your sponsors is Crown Royal and you are suspected of drunk driving, expect the worst. Kenny Wallace replaced Busch in the No. 97 Ford.

"It was the last straw," said Roush Racing president Geoff Smith. "We are officially retiring as Kurt Busch apologists."

Busch was taken into custody Friday night on suspicion of drunk driving. He may have escaped that charge on a technicality.

Busch received a reckless driving citation and was released after a Breathalyzer test machine malfunctioned.

Eddie Sefko on the Mavs …and then at the bottom of the story, David Moore and Eddie Sefko stage a sports argument…When will newspapers realize that the point-counter-point fake arguments are stupid and a waste of time?

Packers rise up and burn Atlanta …I feel like we just won a playoff game…

The sensitive side of Jeremy Roenick

"There is a soft side to me," Roenick said.

There is, and Roenick has proof in writing.

Roenick spends time away from the ice writing poetry — yes, poetry — a quasi-hobby that he has practiced since his days at Thayer Academy, a Massachusetts prep school.

One of his first days as a King was spent at the beach, where words came easy.

"I just thought about life, my life, things that happen around me," Roenick said. "I just wrote what I felt, my family, my experiences. It gets me away from hockey.

"Hey, I'm a metrosexual guy. I have my hard side and my soft side."

There is no denying Roenick is a distinctive individual, far different than many lace-'em-up hockey players — or coaches for that matter. But there are more sides to him than a Rubik's Cube.

"He does poetry?" teammate Craig Conroy said.

"I wrote a four-page poem for my brother's wedding," Roenick said. "I was the best man and did this whole thing like a Dr. Seuss story. I had them all laughing. I wanted to do something that showed how much my brother meant to me growing up. I wanted everyone there to know what it was like to have a brother like mine."

Sturm, you might want to work on your Angelfire links. May I suggest this one instead?

bob,

i've got to disagree with you about the team needing the game beating the team wanting it. i think the cowboys are closer to needing this game too then just wanting it. it's gonna be tough to get a wild card spot with the number of 7-2 & 6-3 teams in the nfc, and to be able to get to 1st place with the giants losing is huge. yes, the eagles need this to salvage the season, but i think the cowboys also realize that they are in a position to kill and essentially knock out a team that's made them look silly the last few years. philly's defense is atrocious, and therein lies the main reason dallas will win. if dallas controls the clock and runs the ball efficiently, then ballgame.

what's the deal with peter king saying t.o. will be a cowboy next? my god, i hope that never will be even considered....

No mention of the England/Argentina match on the blog today? One of the best games England has played for a while. Rooney was on fire and Owen was back to his best. Great to beat the Argies in extra time and see them dropping their greasy heads in shame.

Biggest regular season game in the Parcells era tonight.

These are the reasons why:

-Leading the NFC East
-Cementing that this team is legit
-You are still beating the Eagles in their barn in the cold on Mon. night
-Springboard to a great second half which equals to a quality playoff run

Can we win though....um...that's a tough one right there...

The Eagles will come out tonight with their best effort of the year. They will be flying to the ball for all 4 quarters. McNabb will empty the tank and play balls to the wall. BUT, can they all of a sudden invent a running attack?

no.

I want to say Cowboys 27 Eagles 17

but I sense Cowboys 16 Eagles 17

oh boy... this will be money tonight

Cowboys have a unique opportunity to gain ground/distance themselves from everybody in the division tonight.

I hope Parcells started to drill that into their head the moment Mike Alstott dove into the end zone for the game-winning two-point conversion yesterday.

Because of that (and Philly's atrocious defense with limited offensive capability) I'm going to go with:

Cowboys 24
Iggles 14

Speaking of which, anybody notice how yesterday against the Skins?

Uhh, that should read:

Speaking of yesterday's game, anybody notice how much Chris Simms grew up against the Redskins?

Anonymous said...

Let Simms show us that on a regualr basis before we say he grew up. As a Texas Alum, I have seen many games where he showed greatness, just to fall on his face later. He shouldn't have been starting over Major Applewhite, why would we think he can play in the NFL?

Possibly the truest words I've ever seen on here.
